MMIWG2S+ Healing and Empowerment Fund

On May 5th, 2024, Red Dress Day, the Government of Manitoba announced the MMIWG2S+ Healing and Empowerment Endowment Fund, the first initiative established through the Mino’Ayaawag Ikwewag – All Women Doing Well Provincial Strategy.

The Fund is a direct response to the 231 Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action.

Manitoba is often referred to as “ground zero” for the MMIWG2S+ crisis. The ongoing systemic impacts of colonialism, racism and patriarchal structures continue to compromise the safety, opportunity and well-being of Indigenous women, girls, 2Spirit and gender-diverse relatives.

This Fund advances safety, prevention and empowerment by providing culturally responsive and trauma-informed supports for families and communities.

Each year, the Fund provides support to community through two distinct grant streams administered by Women and Gender Equity Manitoba:

Funding for First Nations, Metis and Inuit organizations providing direct support to MMIWG2S+ families, healing for families, bringing loved ones home, court-related assistance, as well as ceremonial and cultural healing.
Investments in Indigenous-led community initiatives that raise awareness of MMIWG2S+ and advance safety, healing, prevention and empowerment.
