This bursary was established in honour of Cayden Carfrae (aka
Caid Jones), a vibrant spirit and recognized local hip hop artist, who met an untimely departure at the
tender age of 24.
Driven by an unwavering belief in the transformative power of
music, Cayden channeled his creative energy into a force for positive change.
His devotion to community outreach, advocacy for Indigenous voices in business,
and unwavering commitment to social justice illuminated his path.
Beyond the stage, Cayden also dedicated himself to nurturing emerging talent, as well as
mentoring and guiding youth. Under his guidance, youth from many Canadian reserves
found their voices, crafting songs and videos that celebrated cultural
identity, resilience, language, love and the journey to self-acceptance.
“I want to be able to share my story and let them know that,
“Hey, these things are overcomable. You can get past them with the correct
tools, you can get past them with the correct knowledge. You can get past it
with your heart in the right place.”
Gifts to the Cayden Carfrae Memorial Fund will be allocated to the Graffiti Art Gallery, a local organization that provides youth programming for arts and music across the city. Financial support will be provided to young aspiring artists, who, like Cayden, endeavor to use their artistic talents as instruments of positive change. This is what Cayden would have wanted, to continue to inspire and uplift our youth.
