Maya was a supernova who shone so bright. She was a life force and always the life of the party. Maya had countless friends who were all very important in her life and she was always planning the next party, bonfire or event to spend time with them. Maya was a passionate sports fan (Go Bruins Go!), a certified a scuba diver and a world traveler. She saw more places in her 21 short years than most people would see in a lifetime.
Maya was also a youth leader in the Nordic community. She demonstrated leadership qualities in her community work and through her involvement at the Scandinavian Centre. She was a long-time member of the youth dance group, and a Folklorama youth ambassador and an adult ambassador, twice, for the Scandinavian Pavilion. Her compassionate spirit led her to dedicating countless hours to improving her community with a focus on human rights, disadvantaged citizens and anti-bullying.
Maya’s family established the Scandinavian Cultural Centre Maya Person Memorial Scholarship to support students that share Maya’s dedication to community. Gifts to this fund ensures the award continues in perpetuity and Maya is remembered for her giving spirit.
